Ukraine&rsquo;s military on Tuesday reported that around 300 Russian soldiers have entered the embattled eastern town of Pokrovsk, as Moscow steps up its offensive operations in the region.
Ukraine&rsquo;s 7th paratrooper corps said Russian forces had used heavy fog in recent days to deploy additional troops into the town.
&ldquo;Their goal remains unchanged &ndash; to reach the northern borders of Pokrovsk and then attempt to encircle the agglomeration,&rdquo; the corps said in a Facebook statement.
Fierce clashes have continued for months around Pokrovsk, a once vital road and rail hub now reduced to ruins. 
The town has become one of the latest flashpoints in Russia&rsquo;s slow but grinding advance across eastern Ukraine.
Ukrainian officials said defensive operations were ongoing, with reinforcements being positioned to counter Moscow&rsquo;s intensified push toward encirclement.
