Afghanistan continues to reel under a surge of deadly road accidents, with 11 people killed and one injured after a passenger vehicle plunged into a ravine in Badakhshan province&rsquo;s Darayem district on Monday.
Confirming the incident, district police chief Sayed Mir Khangar said the crash was caused by the driver&rsquo;s carelessness, adding that seven of the victims were from the same family.
This tragedy comes on the heels of several similar mishaps across Afghanistan. On the same day, six people were killed in Ghazni province after a car collided with a bus. A day earlier, eight travellers died in Jawzjan province when an overloaded vehicle overturned. Officials noted that the car was carrying 12 passengers, despite having a capacity for only five.
Reckless driving and poor enforcement of traffic rules have led to mounting casualties. Over the past two weeks, more than 100 people have lost their lives in road accidents across the country. The deadliest incident occurred in August in Herat province, where 79 passengers were killed in a single crash.
On August 27, at least 25 people died and 27 were injured when a bus overturned on the highway linking Kandahar to Kabul. Authorities identified speeding and negligence as the primary cause. Days earlier, on August 24, three passengers were killed and four injured in Badakhshan after another vehicle veered off the road.
Local police and emergency services continue to struggle with a rising number of fatal accidents, as families across Afghanistan mourn loved ones lost to preventable tragedies.
