The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has issued an advisory for Navratri in Maharashtra, asking organisers of garba events to allow entry only to Hindus. The outfit has recommended Aadhaar card verification at gates, along with applying tilak and performing puja before participants enter.
VHP spokesperson Shriraj Nair said the festival is a form of worship dedicated to the goddess and not &ldquo;mere entertainment.&rdquo; He added that members of the VHP and Bajrang Dal will keep watch at venues to ensure the guidelines are followed.
The move has sparked a political row. Maharashtra BJP leader Chandrashekhar Bawankule said event organisers are within their rights to set conditions if police permission has been secured. Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar, however, criticised the directive, accusing the VHP of trying to divide society for political gain.
Navratri celebrations in Maharashtra begin on September 22 and continue until October 1, with garba events traditionally drawing large crowds of devotees and youth.
