The United States is moving forward with its plan to raise tariffs on Indian 9:31&nbsp;am IST on August 27, 2025, will effectively double tariffs on Indian goods entering the American market to 50 per cent.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed in its draft notice that the duties apply to all Indian products &ldquo;entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption&rdquo; after the cut-off time.
According to the notice, the action falls under Washington&rsquo;s policy of countering &ldquo;threats to the United States by the government of Russian Federation.&rdquo; It cited Executive Order 14066, which banned imports of Russian-origin crude oil, petroleum fuels, and related products into the US.
President Donald Trump defended the move, linking it directly to India&rsquo;s oil trade with Moscow. &ldquo;India&rsquo;s purchase of Russian oil continues to finance Russia&rsquo;s war in Ukraine. We are applying aggressive economic leverage to stop it,&rdquo; he said.
The tariffs will cover a wide range of Indian goods, sparking concerns in export-driven sectors such as textiles, chemicals, and automobiles. Early market jitters were visible on Tuesday, with Sensex and Nifty slipping in opening trade, as investors reacted to the looming US trade barrier.
While Washington insists the measure is necessary to pressure Russia, New Delhi has consistently rejected the charge. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar earlier termed the move &ldquo;unjustified and unfair,&rdquo; adding that it was being wrongly &ldquo;presented as an oil issue.&rdquo;
The development marks a sharp escalation in trade tensions between the world&rsquo;s largest and fifth-largest economies, with India now preparing for a protracted negotiation to mitigate the fallout.
