As the August 1 deadline for reciprocal tariffs looms, the US administration has stated that further negotiations are required to conclude a bilateral trade agreement with India.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, in an interview with CNBC, noted that discussions with Indian counterparts have been constructive, but more clarity and ambition are needed from both sides. He acknowledged India&rsquo;s interest in opening parts of its market but emphasised the need for continued dialogue to reach a consensus.
Greer highlighted that India has traditionally adopted a trade policy centred on protecting its domestic market, which remains a core consideration in ongoing negotiations.
On China, Greer added that Beijing's readiness for trade talks is encouraging, but no breakthrough is expected.
Back home, Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal recently indicated that an agreement with the US is possible to prevent the imposition of 26% tariffs. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman echoed optimism, stating that talks with both the US and EU are progressing steadily.
US President Donald Trump also signalled that a deal with India is close, hinting at potential openings for American imports. Notably, India has not received the high-tariff notice issued to other nations, suggesting room for final negotiations.
As the deadline approaches, both nations continue their efforts to secure a mutually beneficial trade pact.
