A Florida politician, Chandler Langevin, has sparked outrage across the United States after a string of social media posts calling for the mass deportation of Indians. On Saturday, the city council voted to censure him, stripping him of committee roles and barring him from making commissioner comments without prior approval.
Langevin&rsquo;s posts, which accused Indians of &ldquo;exploiting America financially&rdquo; and claimed &ldquo;there&rsquo;s not a single Indian that cares about the United States,&rdquo; have drawn widespread criticism from Indian American groups and lawmakers. &ldquo;America for Americans,&rdquo; he wrote, in a post that triggered condemnation from across the political spectrum.
Following the backlash, Langevin attempted to clarify his stance, saying his comments were aimed at &ldquo;temporary visa holders,&rdquo; not the broader Indian American community. Yet his earlier posts, including one where he asked Donald Trump to &ldquo;revoke every Indian visa&rdquo; as a &ldquo;birthday wish&rdquo; have continued to fuel anger.
Despite being censured, Langevin doubled down, claiming the move violates his right to free speech. Indian American advocacy groups have since called for his resignation, saying such rhetoric &ldquo;has no place in modern American democracy.&rdquo;
