The United States Embassy in India has issued a strong advisory for international students, cautioning that violations of U.S. laws could result in visa cancellation, deportation and long-term restrictions on future travel to the country.
In a message shared on social media on Wednesday, the embassy stated that student visas are a privilege and not a guaranteed right. It warned that any arrest or breach of American laws could lead to immediate revocation of a student visa, removal from the United States and possible ineligibility for future U.S. visas.
The advisory comes shortly after a similar warning was issued for applicants of H-1B and H-4 work visas. In that notice, the embassy highlighted that violations of U.S. immigration laws may attract severe penalties, including criminal consequences.
The renewed caution aligns with the Donald Trump-led administration&rsquo;s intensified crackdown on illegal immigration and stricter scrutiny of student and work visa programmes. The tightening of norms has already had a visible impact, with new international student enrolments in the U.S. reportedly declining by 17 per cent over the past year.
At the same time, H-1B visa applicants are experiencing extended waiting periods, while several visa interview appointments at U.S. consulates in India have been cancelled or postponed by months following recent policy changes.
The embassy urged visa holders and applicants to strictly comply with U.S. laws and regulations to avoid adverse immigration consequences.
