Authorities in Uttar Pradesh have stepped up security across Bareilly division ahead of Dussehra celebrations, deploying heavy police, PAC, and RAF personnel, while drones monitor sensitive zones.
In a major precautionary move, the state government has suspended internet services, including mobile data, broadband, and SMS in Bareilly district from 3 pm on October 2 to 3 pm on October 4. Officials said this was to prevent the spread of rumours and misinformation on social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and YouTube.
Home Secretary Gaurav Dayal stated the measure was necessary to &ldquo;maintain peace and public order&rdquo; following recent communal unrest.
Divisional Commissioner Bhupendra S Chaudhary issued a high alert for Bareilly, Shahjahanpur, Pilibhit, and Budaun districts, ordering strict vigilance at Ramlila grounds, Durga Puja fairs, and Ravan Dahan venues. He warned that any administrative lapse would invite stern action.
The security clampdown comes after the September 26 Kotwali clash, when protests over the &ldquo;I Love Muhammad&rdquo; poster spiralled into violence, leaving 22 policemen injured. Police have since filed 10 FIRs, naming 125 accused and nearly 3,000 unidentified individuals. Till now, 81 arrests have been made.
Authorities said intelligence agencies are actively monitoring the situation to prevent spillover tensions during the festive season.
