A tragic road accident in Uttarakhand&rsquo;s Haldwani left more than a dozen children injured on Thursday morning when a school bus carrying around 40 students skidded into a gorge near Jaipur Bisa village on Bareilly Road.
Eyewitnesses said the mishap occurred while the bus driver attempted to give way to another school bus near Padampur Dewaliya. The vehicle lost balance, overturned, and tumbled into a roadside ditch.
Locals rushed to rescue the trapped children by breaking the windows and pulling them out safely. Over 12 students were taken to a private hospital in Haldwani with injuries, while the bus driver and conductor also sustained serious wounds.
As news spread, anxious parents hurried to the school, fearing for their children&rsquo;s safety. Villagers alleged reckless and drunk driving by bus drivers in the region, with repeated accidents and little corrective action from school authorities or the administration.
Padampur Dewaliya village head Ramesh Chandra Joshi said, &ldquo;There were about 40 children in the bus. Fortunately, the gorge had no water; otherwise, lives could have been lost.&rdquo;
The incident has once again underscored the urgent need for stricter road safety measures and enhanced school bus monitoring in Uttarakhand.
