From the heart of Egypt&rsquo;s Sharm El-Sheikh, US President Donald Trump had a message that reached all the way to New Delhi. Speaking at the Gaza Peace Summit, Trump hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a &ldquo;very good friend&rdquo; and lauded his leadership, even as the Indian PM skipped the summit and deputed Minister of State Kirti Vardhan Singh to represent India. &ldquo;India is a great country with a very good friend of mine at the top, and he has done a fantastic job,&rdquo; Trump said, as Pakistan&rsquo;s PM Shehbaz Sharif stood nearby.
Trump&rsquo;s remarks reflected the enduring warmth between the two leaders, whose camaraderie has been evident in their public gestures, from birthday calls and shared social media tributes to signed photographs and handwritten notes. Despite the diplomatic tightrope of recent years, Trump continues to praise Modi&rsquo;s leadership, calling him &ldquo;a great man and a great friend.&rdquo;
The US President also revisited his oft-repeated claim of having &ldquo;stopped a nuclear war&rdquo; between India and Pakistan after the 2025 Pahalgam terror attack. &ldquo;I told them if they wanted to fight a nuclear war, I&rsquo;d put 200 per cent tariffs on both,&rdquo; Trump said aboard Air Force One, asserting that his pressure tactics brought peace &ldquo;within 24 hours.&rdquo; India, however, has consistently maintained that no third-party mediation was involved in its ceasefire decision following &lsquo;Operation Sindoor.&rsquo;
Meanwhile, Modi congratulated Trump for brokering the Gaza peace deal, calling it a &ldquo;historic success&rdquo; and reaffirming India&rsquo;s commitment to peace. In a post on X, Modi wrote, &ldquo;Spoke to my friend, President Trump, and congratulated him on the success of the historic Gaza peace plan.&rdquo; His message also praised the release of Israeli hostages, underscoring India&rsquo;s unwavering stance against terrorism.
