Three young men aged between 18 and 20 went missing on Sunday after being swept away by strong currents at Brihaspati Kund, a popular waterfall near the Panna-Pahadikhera road in Madhya Pradesh. The incident occurred when the trio, identified as Twarit Choudhary, Krishna Sharma, and Abhishek Berman, entered the water for a swim.
A joint search operation is underway involving police teams from Panna and Satna districts, supported by divers and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). The search had to be paused Sunday night due to low visibility and resumed early Monday.
Local villagers have also joined the search effort, offering logistical help and local knowledge.
The site, also known as Susi Jalprapat, has witnessed similar tragedies in the past &mdash; including the drowning of a Kanpur medical student in 2024. Despite its status as a tourist attraction, it lacks basic safety features like lifeguards, warning signage, or barricades.
Officials confirmed the incident occurred on Sunday and denied reports of delayed police response. The natural crater and waterfall, associated with religious lore linked to Dev Guru Brihaspati, remains a major draw for tourists but continues to pose safety risks.
