As the Supreme Court reiterates the need to address public safety issues from stray dog menace to cyber and financial crimes the Enforcement Directorate&rsquo;s (ED) investigation into illegal online betting networks has drawn in high-profile names from sports and cinema.
On Wednesday, former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina appeared at the ED&rsquo;s New Delhi office after being summoned in connection with the 1xBet betting app probe. His name surfaced in the investigation due to past advertisements and endorsements for the platform. Officials questioned him on contractual terms, financial transactions, and the extent of his professional links to the betting app. The inquiry is being conducted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
Investigators have found that payments made by app users were routed through frequently changing recipient details before eventually reaching the same 1xBet account. Funds were reportedly transferred abroad from the betting platform&rsquo;s accounts.
The ED has not confirmed whether Raina faces direct criminal charges or is being questioned for information purposes. The summons forms part of a broader crackdown on illegal betting platforms, many endorsed by celebrities.
Earlier, in May, 25 well-known actors, including Rana Daggubati and Prakash Raj, were named in related cases. Several celebrities, such as actors Manchu Lakshmi, Nidhi Agarwal, and Ananya Nagalla, have already appeared before ED officials for questioning on contracts, payments, and promotional activities.
The investigation is ongoing, with financial records and digital footprints of those linked to the platforms under close scrutiny.
