The Supreme Court on Friday adjourned the bail pleas of Sharjeel Imam, Umar Khalid, and seven others challenging the Delhi High Court&rsquo;s rejection of their bail in the UAPA case linked to the 2020 north-east Delhi riots. The hearing has been rescheduled for 22 September, Monday.
During the brief hearing, the lawyer for one of the accused sought deferment of the bail plea, which the two-judge bench, headed by Justice Aravind Kumar and Justice N V Anjaria, allowed.
The other accused include Mohd Saleem Khan, Shifa Ur Rehman, Athar Khan, Meeran Haider, Shadab Ahmed, Abdul Khalid Saifi, and Gulfisha Fatima.
Sharjeel Imam, a former JNU student, had moved the Supreme Court on 6 September after the Delhi High Court rejected his bail plea in the alleged larger conspiracy case under the UAPA. Similarly, Umar Khalid approached the top court on 10 September challenging the Delhi High Court order in the same case.
According to the prosecution, Imam was booked under the stringent UAPA after being arrested on 28 January 2020 from Bihar&rsquo;s Jehanabad in a sedition case for allegedly making inflammatory speeches at Jamia Millia Islamia University and Aligarh Muslim University.
The February 2020 riots erupted following clashes over the then-proposed Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), resulting in 53 deaths and hundreds of injuries, according to the Delhi Police.
