Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi&rsquo;s comments on the ongoing Delhi blasts investigation have ignited a major political controversy. Drawing parallels with the 2006 Mumbai train blasts case, Azmi urged the government to ensure that no innocent person is wrongfully arrested in the name of justice.
Addressing mediapersons, Azmi demanded swift punishment for those responsible for the deadly blasts, calling for their execution within six months. However, he cautioned authorities against making arbitrary arrests to cover up what he described as security lapses that allowed such an attack to occur in the national capital.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swiftly reacted to Azmi&rsquo;s remarks, accusing him of siding with the accused. BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari said the SP leader appeared to be defending individuals under investigation for alleged terror links to the Delhi blasts. He further claimed that this reflects a pattern in the Samajwadi Party&rsquo;s past stance on similar issues.
Azmi, meanwhile, criticized the Maharashtra government for its failure to secure convictions in the 2006 Mumbai train blasts, which claimed 187 lives. He noted that several suspects spent nearly two decades in jail before being acquitted by the court. &ldquo;Arresting innocent people only exposes the inefficiency of the system,&rdquo; he said, reiterating that justice should be delivered swiftly and fairly.
His remarks came shortly after Union Home Minister Amit Shah directed investigative agencies to track down every individual involved in the Delhi blasts.
Responding further, BJP leader Rajeev Chandrashekhar alleged that such statements by opposition leaders embolden extremist forces and undermine national security efforts.
