A tragic accident occurred at a plastic goods manufacturing unit in Umargam, Vapi, after an iron shed collapsed on Tuesday, killing one worker and injuring eight others. Three of the injured are in critical condition.
Initial findings suggest the collapse was caused by plastic granule-filled bags being improperly stored on top of the shed, exposing major lapses in industrial safety practices.
Emergency teams, including the Fire Department and rescue personnel, arrived swiftly and began rescue efforts. The workers pulled from the debris were identified as Manmahendra Das, Shubham Kuswah, Amarnath Saroj, Shubh Lad, Surendra Beheria, Sajid Khan, Vikas Chaudhary, and Bhavin Joshi. Sadly, Bhavin Joshi succumbed to his injuries.
The injured were immediately taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Umargam Police, led by Inspector Chaudhary, are investigating the incident. Authorities believe the combination of excessive weight on the shed and recent monsoon conditions may have caused the structural failure.
This incident is the latest in a troubling pattern of industrial mishaps across Gujarat&rsquo;s manufacturing hubs. In February 2025, a scaffolding collapse at a Surat textile unit claimed two lives. Repeated safety breaches have been reported in key industrial clusters such as Vapi, Ankleshwar, Dahej, and Rajkot.
Data from Gujarat&rsquo;s Labour Department shows that between 2020 and 2024, over 300 industrial accidents occurred in the state. These incidents have led to the deaths of more than 180 workers and injuries to over 800 others, often due to poor infrastructure maintenance, safety violations, or mishandling of hazardous materials.
