Days after the Supreme Court stayed the bail granted to former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the 2017 Unnao rape case, his daughter Ishita Sengar released an open letter describing years of fear, social hostility, and emotional exhaustion faced by her family.
Writing on social media, Ishita said she was speaking not from a position of influence but as &ldquo;a daughter who is exhausted, frightened, and slowly losing faith.&rdquo; She questioned the public perception of her family as powerful, asking what kind of power leaves people &ldquo;voiceless for eight years.&rdquo;

In the letter addressed to constitutional authorities, Ishita said her identity has been reduced to a political label, stripping her of individuality and humanity. She alleged that she has repeatedly received threats and violent abuse online, including calls for sexual violence and death, simply because of her association with the case.
She explained that her family chose silence over public protest, believing that truth and due process would prevail without spectacle or noise. That decision, she said, came at a heavy cost. According to her account, the family has endured years of public vilification, financial strain, and emotional trauma while moving from office to office seeking to be heard.
Ishita argued that their suffering stemmed not from a lack of evidence or facts, but because their version of events was inconvenient amid widespread outrage. She expressed concern that fear and public pressure can overwhelm due process, leaving little room for facts to be examined calmly.
The letter insists it is not a plea for sympathy or special treatment, but a request for fairness and for institutions to examine evidence without being swayed by public frenzy. She said her faith in the justice system is shaken, yet not entirely lost.
Her letter surfaced after the Supreme Court intervened to stay the Delhi High Court order that had suspended Sengar&rsquo;s life sentence and granted him bail during the pendency of his appeal. The apex court issued notice to Sengar on a plea challenging the bail order.
Meanwhile, the Unnao rape survivor welcomed the Supreme Court&rsquo;s decision, expressing confidence in the judicial process and stating that she continues to place her trust in the country&rsquo;s highest court.
Kuldeep Singh Sengar was convicted in December 2019 under the POCSO Act and sentenced to life imprisonment. He has served over seven years in custody. The High Court had cited the length of incarceration and questioned the applicability of aggravated charges while granting bail, a decision now paused by the Supreme Court.
