Saee Jadhav from Kolhapur in Maharashtra has created history by becoming the first woman Territorial Army officer to complete pre-commissioning training at the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, ending a 93-year tradition of male-only officer training at the prestigious institution.
The 23-year-old was commissioned as a Lieutenant during the passing-out parade of the 157th course held last week. Her commissioning on December 13 marks a landmark moment for the IMA, which was established in 1932 and has trained generations of Indian Army officers.
Saee has been commissioned into the 130 Territorial Army Battalion of the Kumaon Regiment, based in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand. Alongside her military training, she is currently pursuing an MBA through distance learning.
Her father, Major Sandip Jadhav, a serving Territorial Army officer, said that Saee cleared the Territorial Army examination held in December 2023. With only one vacancy available for a woman officer and her securing the top position on the merit list, she was selected for commissioning.
Coming from a family with a strong armed forces background, Saee represents the fourth generation of the Jadhav family to serve the nation. Her achievement highlights the growing opportunities for women in India&rsquo;s defence forces.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis congratulated Saee, calling her success a proud moment for the state and an inspiring example for young girls aspiring to serve the country.
