In a major pre-Independence Day security success, Punjab Police&rsquo;s Counter Intelligence wing, working with SBS Nagar Police, has dismantled a Pakistan-backed Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) terror module, arresting five operatives from Rajasthan&rsquo;s Tonk and Jaipur districts.
The group, directed by Pakistan-based BKI operative Harwinder Singh Rinda through foreign handlers Mannu Agwan, Gopi Nawashehria, and Zeeshan Akhtar, had plotted multiple strikes in Punjab &mdash; including a recent attempted attack on a liquor store in SBS Nagar and fresh plans for August 15.
During a recovery operation, one accused opened fire on police and was injured in retaliatory action before being taken to Civil Hospital, SBS Nagar. Officers recovered an 86P hand grenade, a .30 bore pistol, live rounds, and empty shells.
Police have registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Explosive Substances Act. DGP Gaurav Yadav has issued directives for heightened inter-district coordination, 24/7 surveillance, and strengthened checkpoints to ensure peaceful I-Day celebrations in the border state.
Alongside counter-terror measures, the DGP also reviewed anti-drug operations under the &lsquo;Yudh Nashian Virudh&rsquo; campaign and ordered financial probes targeting hawala networks to dismantle the nexus between drug trafficking and organised crime.
