Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited&rsquo;s (BSNL) indigenously developed 4G technology stack, marking a milestone in India&rsquo;s telecom sector. The rollout, coinciding with BSNL&rsquo;s silver jubilee, places India among a select group of countries such as Denmark, Sweden, South Korea, and China that manufacture their own telecom equipment.
Speaking at the inauguration, the Prime Minister said the launch reflects India&rsquo;s shift &ldquo;from dependence to confidence,&rdquo; strengthening job creation, exports, fiscal growth, and the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
Developed entirely with indigenous technology, the cloud-based 4G stack is designed to be future-ready and seamlessly upgradable to 5G. Officials noted that this adaptability will enable BSNL to expand next-generation telecom services swiftly across the country, furthering the goals of Digital India and narrowing the digital divide.
The new network rollout will connect more than 26,700 previously unserved villages, including 2,472 in Odisha, particularly in remote, border, and left-wing extremism-affected areas. To support the initiative, BSNL has deployed mobile towers across states such as Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Assam, Gujarat, and Bihar.
Alongside the launch of the 4G stack, the Prime Minister also dedicated over 97,500 new mobile towers, of which 92,600 are 4G-enabled. Built at an investment of around ₹37,000 crore, these towers are expected to serve over 20 lakh new subscribers. Importantly, the installations are solar-powered, making them the largest cluster of green telecom sites in the country and a significant step toward sustainable infrastructure.
The Prime Minister further announced India&rsquo;s achievement of 100 per cent 4G saturation, underscoring the government&rsquo;s commitment to ensuring universal access to digital services.
The launch of BSNL&rsquo;s indigenous 4G stack is seen as a transformative leap in India&rsquo;s telecom journey bridging connectivity gaps, empowering rural communities, and positioning the country as a global player in advanced telecom technology.
