A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court demanding the immediate suspension of Air India's Boeing aircraft operations until a comprehensive safety audit is conducted.
Filed by advocate Ajay Bansal, the plea raises concerns following the recent Ahmedabad-London crash and widespread reports of maintenance and service deficiencies. The petition urges the Centre, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), and the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) to ground all aircraft lacking prescribed international safety features or found to be non-functional until repairs are made.
The PIL also calls for unannounced DGCA audits across all airline fleets in India, with findings made public. It further requests the formulation of stricter guidelines mandating periodic checks of all cabin equipment, engines, and critical systems, in line with global standards.
Highlighting a 2023 media report about lapses in Air India&rsquo;s internal safety audit, the petitioner recounted his own unsatisfactory flight experience from Delhi to Chicago, where his seat and in-flight systems malfunctioned.
He claims the June 12 Ahmedabad crash, combined with poor service and safety concerns, has eroded public trust in the national carrier.
In response to growing scrutiny, an eight-member DGCA team has begun a special audit of Air India&rsquo;s Gurugram headquarters, as part of a broader inspection across India&rsquo;s aviation sector.
