In the wake of the deadly Boeing Dreamliner crash in Ahmedabad, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport has summoned key stakeholders &mdash; including Boeing executives, Air India officials, the Civil Aviation Secretary, and senior officials from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) &mdash; for a high-level meeting on air safety. The meeting is expected to take place in the first week of July.
According to sources, the committee will examine several pressing concerns such as lapses in aircraft maintenance, the growing frequency of aviation mishaps, and pilot mental fitness assessments. Recent helicopter accidents on the Char Dham route will also be under scrutiny.
The committee's findings are likely to be presented in the upcoming session of Parliament. Ahead of this, members will travel to Gangtok to review connectivity and tourism-related infrastructure in the Northeast, including an onboard review of Air India operations.
Following the Ahmedabad crash, the DGCA suspended three senior Air India officials from crew scheduling roles and has demanded disciplinary action from the airline, warning of potential licence suspension if non-compliance continues.
Meanwhile, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), with the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), has begun extracting data from the black box recovered from Flight AI171. Officials confirmed that the data retrieval process began on June 24, and the memory module was accessed successfully on June 25.
