Palestinian Ambassador to India, Abdullah Abu Shawesh, praised India&rsquo;s global influence, calling it a key player in political affairs. Speaking to ANI, Shawesh highlighted that India, as the world&rsquo;s largest democracy with 1.4 billion people, has the potential to reshape the international arena through its decisions at the United Nations.
He noted Prime Minister Narendra Modi&rsquo;s continued support for Palestine, including India&rsquo;s annual contribution of USD 5 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). Shawesh said this financial aid underscores India&rsquo;s commitment to the Palestinian cause.
The envoy emphasised the strong ties between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Modi, expressing confidence that their close relationship would continue.
Tracing the historical roots, Shawesh recalled that India and Palestine declared independence around the same time. He pointed out that India supported Palestine&rsquo;s 1936 revolution and later became the first non-Arab, non-Muslim country to recognise the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) in 1974. India also voted against the 1947 partition plan for Palestine under Mahatma Gandhi&rsquo;s leadership, further cementing its support.
Calling India&rsquo;s political power &ldquo;very respected,&rdquo; Shawesh reaffirmed Palestine&rsquo;s trust in India&rsquo;s continued solidarity with its people.
