India Responds Firmly to Pakistani Ceasefire Violations Ahead of Army Chief&rsquo;s Visit to J&amp;K
In a significant escalation of tensions along the Line of Control (LoC), Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked firing at multiple locations in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, just hours before Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi&rsquo;s scheduled visit to Srinagar and Udhampur. The Indian Army responded with precision and resolve, effectively neutralising the provocation, according to sources within the security establishment.
Defence officials confirmed that there were several incidents of small arms fire initiated by Pakistan along the LoC. &ldquo;The firing was effectively responded to,&rdquo; said a senior official, underlining India&rsquo;s preparedness and commitment to maintaining peace while protecting its sovereignty.
The timing of the ceasefire violation is notable, as it coincides with General Dwivedi&rsquo;s tour of the region. The Army Chief is expected to meet senior commanders deployed in the Kashmir Valley to assess the prevailing security situation, including the recent pattern of ceasefire violations. He will also engage with top officials from various security agencies to coordinate a calibrated response to Pakistan&rsquo;s actions.
This latest provocation comes in the aftermath of the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives and reignited Indian concerns over Pakistan&rsquo;s continued patronage of cross-border terrorism. In response, New Delhi has taken a series of decisive countermeasures.
In a high-level Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Indian government decided to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960. This move sends a strong diplomatic signal, placing the historic agreement in abeyance until Pakistan demonstrates a permanent cessation of support for cross-border terrorist activities.
Retaliating diplomatically and logistically, Pakistan has closed its airspace to all commercial and defence aircraft until midnight on May 25th. This blanket closure further underscores the deteriorating bilateral climate. India, for its part, has shut down operations at the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Attari, a key land trade and transit point on the India-Pakistan border.
Defence analysts view the sequence of developments as indicative of a hardening stance in New Delhi, reflective of a broader strategic shift that links military posture with diplomatic and water-security levers. With the Indian Army maintaining high operational alertness along the LoC, the situation remains fluid, and further escalations cannot be ruled out.
As General Dwivedi arrives in Jammu and Kashmir, all eyes will be on his assessment of the ground situation and the potential recalibration of India's counter-terror and border management strategy in the face of renewed hostilities.
