In yet another case of&nbsp;AI-generated misinformation, propaganda accounts linked to Pakistan circulated a doctored video of Indian Army officer Lt Gen Manjinder Singh, falsely portraying him as criticizing the Indian Army&rsquo;s operations ahead of the Bihar elections.
The fake clip, which quickly gained traction on social media, appeared to show the South Western Army Commander calling the Army&rsquo;s threshold exercises &ldquo;political optics to boost the image for the Bihar polls.&rdquo; However, India&rsquo;s Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check Unit swiftly debunked the clip on Friday, revealing it to be digitally manipulated.
&ldquo;This AI-generated fake video is being circulated to mislead people and create distrust against the Indian Armed Forces,&rdquo; the PIB clarified on X (formerly Twitter), urging users to verify before sharing unverified content.
In a side-by-side comparison, the PIB released both the original and the altered videos. The authentic clip, filmed in Bikaner, Rajasthan, showed Lt Gen Singh addressing Army readiness and modernization efforts.
&ldquo;The Indian Army is following the political direction of the &lsquo;New Normal,&rsquo; under which any terror act on the country will be considered an act of war. The military has to prepare for any such activities. A lot of technologies and capabilities have been introduced for this. Our focus is on maximum night training; hence, we are carrying out 70% of the training at night and 30% during the day,&rdquo; Lt Gen Singh had said in the original footage.
The fake version, in contrast, falsely depicted him making politically charged comments such as &ldquo;the Indian Army belongs only to the Republic, not to Modi.&rdquo; Officials have confirmed no such remarks were ever made.
This incident follows a similar case earlier in October when an AI-edited video of Lt Gen Manoj Kumar Katiyar was circulated online, falsely suggesting Indian military payments to the Afghan Taliban, an allegation that was also promptly fact-checked and debunked by PIB.
Experts warn that the weaponization of AI tools to distort official communications and sow distrust poses a growing threat to national security narratives, especially amid heightened regional tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
