The Indian Army successfully thwarted an infiltration attempt in the Uri sector of North Kashmir on Wednesday, neutralizing two militants in a fierce gunfight. The operation remains ongoing as forces continue combing the area for possible additional intruders.
According to a post by the Chinar Corps on X, &ldquo;There was a heavy exchange of fire between security forces and terrorists. Two militants have been killed, and the infiltration attempt has been thwarted. A large cache of weapons, ammunition, and other war-like stores have been recovered.&rdquo;
The encounter began early Wednesday when the Army detected movement near a stream in the Uri sector&rsquo;s Sarjeevan area, Baramulla district. As troops challenged the infiltrators, they came under fire, prompting a gunfight that resulted in the death of two militants.
The Army added, &ldquo;On April 23, 2025, approximately two to three unidentified militants attempted to infiltrate through the Sarjeevan area near Uri Nala. Alert soldiers along the LoC engaged them, leading to a firefight. The operation is ongoing.&rdquo; The infiltration comes a day after a heinous terrorist attack in Pahalgam&rsquo;s Baisaran meadow, a popular yet remote tourist destination only accessible by foot. The attack left 26 dead and several others injured, marking the first targeted attack on tourists in 2025.
Eyewitness accounts detail the harrowing experience. One survivor described how the assailants, dressed in uniform, initially posed as security personnel. &ldquo;They asked for our names. We thought they were police. Then they opened fire, shooting the men at point-blank range and sparing the women,&rdquo; she recalled.
Investigations reveal that the four attackers used American-made M4 carbines and AK-47 rifles. Police recovered 50&ndash;70 spent cartridges from the site. The use of U.S.-origin weapons has sparked concern, especially after Punjab Police seized a similar weapons cache on the same day during a crackdown on ISI-backed terror modules.
In that coordinated operation, 13 operatives were arrested, and arms including two rocket-propelled grenade launchers, two remote-controlled IEDs containing two kilograms of RDX, hand grenades, five pistols, 44 live rounds, wireless sets, and vehicles were recovered.
Security agencies believe these incidents may be linked and are investigating connections to The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba, known to be involved in previous attacks in Jammu and Kashmir.
