A Muharram procession in Jharkhand&rsquo;s Giridih district turned tragic on Sunday when a Tazia being carried by participants accidentally touched an 11,000-volt overhead electric wire. The incident occurred in Chakosingha village under the Thodthambha police outpost.
As the large ceremonial structure was lifted during the traditional procession, it came into contact with the high-tension line, causing a massive electric shock. One person died on the spot, while four others suffered injuries, two of them critically. The injured have been admitted to Giridih District Hospital.
Giridih Deputy Commissioner Ramniwas Yadav confirmed the incident and said immediate medical aid was provided. The shocking incident led to panic and chaos among mourners.
This marks the latest in a series of similar incidents. In 2023, two separate Muharram-related electrocutions in Giridih and Bokaro districts left several dead and injured. Despite Jharkhand State Electricity Board&rsquo;s recent advisories restricting the height of Tazias and flags&mdash;following a High Court directive&mdash;processions across the state continue to flout safety norms.
Authorities are investigating the matter and have urged strict compliance with safety guidelines to prevent such tragedies in future processions.
