Nature's Grand Spectacle: Mass Nesting of Olive Ridley Turtles Returns to Odisha's Shores
In a remarkable display of nature's clockwork precision, approximately 300,000 Olive Ridley turtles have arrived at Odisha's coastline for their annual mass nesting phenomenon, known as "arribada." These endangered marine creatures, distinguished by their olive-green shells, make an extraordinary journey of over 9,000 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean to reach India's eastern shores.
This year's nesting event has drawn particular attention due to its unusual diurnal pattern, as noted by Supriya Sahu, IAS and Additional Chief Secretary of Environment, Climate Change, and Forests for Tamil Nadu. The spectacle serves as a promising indicator of the marine ecosystem's health, with the turtles playing a vital role in maintaining ecological balance.

According to the Odisha Forest Department, the turtles have already laid 555,638 eggs at the Rushikulya and Devi River mouth locations. Each female typically deposits between 120 to 150 eggs, which require 45 to 50 days to hatch. The Gahirmatha rookery in Kendrapara district, recognized as the world's largest nesting beach for these turtles, continues to be a crucial site for their preservation.
The history of documented mass nesting in this region dates back to 1974, when FAO consultant Robert Bustard first discovered the phenomenon at Gahirmatha during a crocodile survey at Bhitarkanika. Odisha remains one of the few global locations where this mass nesting occurs, though the event has been inconsistent, with no nesting recorded in 2002, 2007, 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2024.

The previous year, 2023, marked a historic achievement with over 637,000 turtles nesting along a three-kilometer stretch from Podampeta to Bateshwar near the river mouth. This record-breaking event occurred during an eight-day period from February 23 to March 3.
To protect these endangered creatures, the Indian Coast Guard has maintained its annual 'Operation Olivia' since 1991, working in conjunction with state and central authorities under the Wildlife Act of 1972. The operation includes rigorous monitoring of fishing vessels, with approximately 150 boats investigated to ensure compliance with protection measures. Additionally, the government enforces a fishing ban within 20 kilometers of nesting sites from November 1 to May 31, when the turtles gather for nesting.
Despite the success of recent mass nesting events, the Olive Ridley turtle remains classified as endangered by the World Conservation Union, highlighting the ongoing importance of conservation efforts. The coordinated protection measures involve various agencies, including forest staff, coast guard personnel, marine police, and marine fishery departments, all working together to safeguard these remarkable creatures during their crucial nesting period.
