The Odisha government has announced plans to restore Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore&rsquo;s historic residence, &lsquo;Pather Puri,&rsquo; in Puri and convert it into a museum. The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Minister of Odia Language, Literature, and Culture, Suryavanshi Suraj.
The heritage building, located near the Puri sea beach, once served as a boys&rsquo; hostel for Samanta Chandra Sekhar College before being abandoned. The land was originally allotted to Tagore in 1939 by the then-prime minister of Odisha during British rule. The Tagore family later donated the property to the state for educational purposes.
Historians note that Tagore stayed in the building for some time and composed several renowned works, including Pravasi, Janmadin, Epare Opare, and parts of Gitanjali. Despite its cultural value, the building was severely damaged during Cyclone Fani in 2019 and remains in a deteriorated state.
The state government has partnered with the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) for its conservation.
