A final-year undergraduate student died by suicide after allegedly setting herself on fire in Pattamundai, Kendrapara district, due to ongoing blackmail by her ex-boyfriend.
According to her grieving father, the girl was in a relationship that ended months ago. However, the youth continued to harass her by sending obscene images and issuing death threats.
&ldquo;We approached the police six to eight months ago, but they only advised us to block his number,&rdquo; the father told the media, accusing local law enforcement of negligence.
Initial reports state that the girl was alone at home when she committed the act. Following the incident, Kendrapara SP Siddharth Kataria visited the scene and assured a thorough investigation into both the cause of death and the alleged police inaction.
This tragic case follows two similar incidents in Odisha. A 16-year-old girl from Puri district, who was set ablaze by bike-borne men, died at AIIMS Delhi. Before that, a college student in Balasore succumbed to burn injuries after self-immolation, accusing a faculty member of sexual harassment.
These recurring incidents highlight the urgent need for stronger protection and justice mechanisms for young women in Odisha.
