The Union Home Ministry has confirmed that the blast inside the Nowgam police station in Jammu and Kashmir was accidental. The explosion occurred on Friday night while officials were collecting samples of explosive material for forensic analysis.
The explosives stored at the police station were part of the cache recovered from the Faridabad-based module linked to the Red Fort car blast case involving several doctors. Sampling of the material had been underway for two days, as the explosives had been transported from Faridabad and kept in an open designated area within the police station premises.
The blast resulted in the deaths of nine people and left 27 others injured. The explosion caused massive damage to the police station building and also impacted nearby structures.
According to the Home Ministry, the Nowgam police had earlier uncovered a terror network using leads from an investigation into a poster case. During this probe, authorities recovered a large quantity of chemicals and explosive substances. Agencies involved in the investigation were working together to process and examine the seized material.
The ministry clarified that the explosion took place around 11:20 pm due to the unstable nature of the recovered explosives despite careful handling under expert supervision. Officials stated that the cause is under investigation and urged the public to avoid unnecessary speculation.
