The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has formally taken over the probe into the Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 people dead, including a Nepali national. Initially handled by the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the investigation was transferred to the NIA following orders from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
NIA teams have been stationed at the attack site since April 23, a day after the tragedy, intensifying efforts to gather crucial evidence. The investigation is being led by senior officials, including an Inspector General (IG), a Deputy Inspector General (DIG), and a Superintendent of Police (SP) from the agency.
The NIA&rsquo;s immediate focus is on recording the testimonies of eyewitnesses who were present during the horrific attack at Baisaran Valley, a popular tourist destination in Pahalgam. Witnesses recounted how the terrorists approached groups of sightseers, asked about their religion, and then opened fire at close range.
Investigators are meticulously reconstructing the sequence of events based on these testimonies. In parallel, forensic experts are combing the area for physical evidence, while the NIA is examining the entry and exit routes used by the attackers to understand their modus operandi.
On April 22, terrorists opened fire on tourists in the Baisaran meadows, killing 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen. Witnesses confirmed that Hindu men were specifically targeted during the assault.
In response, security forces have launched a massive search operation across the valley. Several suspects have been detained, and authorities have demolished the homes of ten declared terrorists as part of the ongoing crackdown.
