On the 17th anniversary of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday led the nation in paying homage to the civilians, security personnel and commandos who laid down their lives during one of India&rsquo;s darkest nights. Remembering the sacrifice of those who fought to protect Mumbai between November 26 and 29, 2008, she said, &ldquo;The nation remembers their supreme sacrifice with gratitude. Let us reaffirm our commitment to combat terrorism in all forms.&rdquo;
The coordinated assault, carried out by 10 Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists, killed 175 people, including 26 foreign nationals and 20 security personnel. While nine attackers were gunned down, Ajmal Kasab, the sole surviving terrorist was captured alive and later executed. The scale of the attack and the endurance of the forces who fought for nearly 60 hours remain seared into national memory.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute, calling 26/11 a reminder of the brutality of terrorism and the need for global unity against it. &ldquo;Terrorism is a curse for the entire human race. India&rsquo;s zero-tolerance policy under PM Modi is clear, and the world stands with us,&rdquo; he said. Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi too honoured the victims, saying India would &ldquo;never forget their courage and sacrifice&rdquo;.
Chief ministers and Union ministers echoed the sentiment, with UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stating that a &ldquo;new India&rdquo; remains united in eliminating every form of terror. As leaders across party lines marked the solemn anniversary, the message was unmistakable, India&rsquo;s resolve to fight terrorism remains as unshaken as the bravery displayed on 26/11.
