The hostage crisis that gripped Mumbai&rsquo;s Powai on Thursday was far from impulsive, it was a&nbsp;carefully orchestrated plan by short filmmaker Rohit Arya, who lured 17 teenagers under the guise of shooting a web series. What began as an acting audition turned into a harrowing standoff that ended only after police intervention and Arya&rsquo;s death in a shootout.
Authorities revealed that Arya had meticulously prepared for the siege days in advance. He had installed CCTV cameras across the studio and monitored the feed through his smartphone. He even stockpiled food and supplies, repaired the studio&rsquo;s latch, and set up motion sensors to detect intruders&mdash;indicating that he was prepared for a prolonged standoff.
According to Sachin Jadhav, the father of one of the hostages, Arya began filming on October 26 and appeared normal until he started covering the studio windows with black paper on Tuesday. &ldquo;He said the sunlight was disturbing the shoot,&rdquo; Jadhav said.
Arya&rsquo;s assistant, Rohan Raj Aher, who was also among the hostages, told police that the filmmaker had claimed he was making a movie about children rebelling against corruption. &ldquo;He told me the plot required a scene where kids would be kidnapped,&rdquo; Aher recalled. &ldquo;I had worked with Arya off and on since 2012. He called me recently for this project, and I didn&rsquo;t suspect anything unusual.&rdquo;
But by Thursday afternoon, Arya&rsquo;s act turned sinister. Around 1:50 pm, when the children failed to emerge for lunch, parents grew anxious. Arya then sent a video message declaring that he had taken all 17 children hostage. Panic erupted outside the studio.
Investigators later found that Arya had asked his assistant to bring five litres of petrol and firecrackers, and had even spread flammable liquid across the studio floor. &ldquo;He threatened me with an air gun when I tried to break in,&rdquo; Aher recounted. &ldquo;He had poured rubber solution on a cloth and said he could ignite it with a lighter.&rdquo;
As panic mounted, police officers arrived at the scene and eventually stormed the studio with Aher&rsquo;s help. The children were safely rescued, but the confrontation ended with Arya being shot dead after he allegedly refused to surrender.
Officials believe the accused had descended into a psychological breakdown, using his film project as a front for a deeper delusion of control and publicity. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) is expected to conduct a psychological autopsy to understand his motive.
What was meant to be a creative set became a scene of terror, as Arya&rsquo;s supposed &ldquo;anti-corruption&rdquo; film turned into a grim real-life tragedy.
