Torrential monsoon rains have left a trail of destruction across multiple Indian states, claiming at least nine lives in Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan.
In Himachal Pradesh, four people lost their lives &mdash; two drowned in Kullu and Kangra, one died in a snakebite incident in Bilaspur, and another succumbed to injuries after falling from a height. The state has recorded 61 rain-related deaths since June 20. Over 200 roads, including 157 in the disaster-struck Mandi district, remain closed, while water and electricity supply have been hit in several regions.
In Rajasthan&rsquo;s Kota district, five youths were swept away by the rising waters of the Chambal River after heavy rain prompted the release of over 2.26 lakh cusecs of water from all 12 gates of the Kota Barrage. Rescue operations are ongoing.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red, orange, and yellow alerts across states like Jharkhand, Odisha, and Himachal Pradesh. Flash flood warnings were issued for 12 districts in Jharkhand, with severe rainfall expected to continue until July 17.
Odisha, too, faces a red alert for extremely heavy rain in Mayurbhanj, Keonhar, and Sundargarh. Fishermen have been advised to avoid the north Bay of Bengal due to gusty winds reaching up to 60 kmph.
Delhi and Kolkata saw light to moderate rainfall, bringing temporary relief from heat, while widespread downpours continue across South Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh.
Authorities urge residents to remain alert, as weather systems show signs of further intensification in the coming days.
