A mob clashed with security forces in Churachandpur district of Manipur on Sunday after two local youths were detained for allegedly vandalising banners and cutouts ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi&rsquo;s visit.
The alleged vandalism took place on September 11 in Pearsonmun and Phailien Bazaar. Several youths were initially detained, but all except two were released after questioning. Their continued custody sparked a protest outside the Churachandpur police station. The demonstration soon escalated, with protesters pelting stones at security personnel.
Police said the two were not picked up randomly but from the site of the vandalism. The situation calmed only after the authorities released the youths.
Modi visited Manipur on Saturday, marking his first trip to the state since the ethnic clashes between Kukis and Meiteis began in May 2023. He addressed rallies in both Churachandpur and Imphal, promising to turn the state into a &ldquo;symbol of peace&rdquo; while unveiling development projects and meeting victims of the violence.
