The Meghalaya Police and the Border Security Force have firmly dismissed reports claiming that two Bangladeshi nationals accused in a recent murder crossed into India through the international border and are currently hiding in the state.
Senior officials at the Meghalaya Police headquarters said allegations suggesting that the accused entered India from Bangladesh&rsquo;s Haluaghat border area are entirely false and lack any factual basis. According to the police, no official or informal communication has been received from Bangladeshi authorities regarding the suspects, nor has any intelligence input supported the claim of a cross-border movement.
The police clarified that none of the individuals named in the reports have been traced in the Garo Hills region, and no arrests related to the case have been made in Meghalaya. Claims that local facilitators assisted the alleged border crossing were also rejected, with officials stating that no such persons have been identified, verified, or apprehended anywhere in the state.
Backing the police assessment, the Border Security Force said there is no evidence to suggest that the suspects crossed the international boundary into Meghalaya. The force emphasised that all border activity is monitored through established surveillance and intelligence protocols, and no incident matching the reported claims has been detected.
Security officials expressed concern that such unverified narratives circulating in sections of Bangladeshi media could create unnecessary confusion and risk disturbing peace in Meghalaya, a sensitive border state that regularly deals with transborder crime and security challenges.
Authorities also pointed out that this is not the first instance of misinformation. In recent weeks, similar reports alleging fatal actions by Indian border forces were later disproved after verification.
While rejecting the allegations, Meghalaya Police said border vigilance has been enhanced as a routine preventive measure. Officials stressed that heightened security should not be interpreted as confirmation of false claims but as standard protocol to prevent misuse of border routes by criminal elements.
Both the Meghalaya Police and the BSF reiterated their willingness to cooperate with Bangladesh authorities through formal and verified channels, underlining that actionable steps can only be taken on the basis of confirmed intelligence, not speculative narratives.
