In a powerful push against rising drug abuse, Mangaluru Police have launched an innovative, community-driven campaign to dismantle drug networks in the city. Spearheaded by Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy, the initiative engages both victims of drug addiction and their families to help identify peddlers and trace supply chains.
So far, five arrests have been made, including a key supplier. Encouraged by community support, Commissioner Reddy appealed for more parents to come forward. &ldquo;Two complaints helped us crack a network supplying 200 people. If more come forward, we can reach thousands,&rdquo; he said.
Unlike traditional enforcement, the strategy treats addicts as victims, focusing on both breaking supply chains and reducing demand through counselling and awareness. Colleges are also collaborating with police to screen students and raise awareness.
According to Reddy, nearly 50% of peddlers are users themselves. "Stopping addiction early can prevent future drug crimes," he noted.
While acknowledging staffing constraints due to ongoing communal tensions in the region, Reddy believes committed efforts can reduce drug activity by up to 60%.
The initiative has gained momentum with strong public backing and is seen as a model for citizen-police partnerships in combating urban drug abuse.
