Security forces have delivered a major setback to Maoist groups operating along the Madhya Pradesh&ndash;Maharashtra&ndash;Chhattisgarh tri-junction, recovering a massive cache of Left Wing Extremism (LWE) material from an abandoned camp in the dense forests near Kauhapani village in Balaghat district.
The operation was launched on November 19 after specific intelligence indicated a Maoist movement in the hilly terrain. Nearly 300 personnel from the three states were deployed, intensifying searches across a 15-km stretch of difficult jungle terrain. For three days, teams combed ravines, hilltops, and forest interiors to restrict the insurgents&rsquo; escape routes.
On November 22, the coordinated second phase of the operation by Chhattisgarh STF, DRG Rajnandgaon, and DRG Mohla-Manpur-Ambagarh Chowki closed in on a temporary Maoist hideout. As forces advanced, the Maoists fled deeper into the forest, leaving behind a substantial stockpile of material.
Recovered items include uniforms, backpacks, solar panels, walkie-talkies, detonators, explosives, tents, tarpaulins, cooking utensils, ration supplies, and key documents such as diaries and propaganda literature. Officials say this is among the largest seizures in the region this year, dealing a significant logistical blow to Maoist units.
The joint offensive saw intense gunfire on the first day, during which Inspector Ashish Sharma of Balaghat Police was martyred while leading his team. Blood trails at the site indicate at least three Maoists suffered serious gunshot injuries. Intelligence inputs suggest the fugitives attempted to secure medical aid from nearby villages but were denied assistance by residents.
All seized materials have been sent for forensic examination. Security agencies say the enhanced joint operation will continue until the remaining Maoist cadres are neutralised or surrender.
