The Maharashtra government has accepted key demands of Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange-Patil, paving the way for the withdrawal of the ongoing protest at Mumbai&rsquo;s Azad Maidan.
The government agreed to implement the Hyderabad and Satara gazettes, which recognise Marathas as Kunbis, and the &ldquo;Sage Soyare&rdquo; notification that extends benefits to blood and marital relatives. It also assured immediate implementation of the Hyderabad gazette, with a one-month timeline for the Satara and Pune-Aundh gazettes due to legal procedures.
As part of the settlement, the government will withdraw all pending cases filed against Maratha protesters during the agitations of 2023 and 2024. Families of youth who lost their lives in the quota struggle will receive compensation and jobs on compassionate grounds in state transport and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC).
Additionally, the state will form taluka-level committees to streamline the issuance of Kunbi caste certificates and ensure faster clearance by validation committees. The move follows the identification of 5.8 million records related to Kunbi status by the government.
With these assurances, Jarange-Patil confirmed that protesters will vacate Azad Maidan once the official government resolution (GR) is issued, bringing the agitation to an end.
