In response to a devastating stampede that claimed 30 lives and left 60 injured at Prayagraj's Sangam area during the Maha Kumbh, the Uttar Pradesh government has implemented comprehensive safety reforms. The incident, which occurred during the sacred Mauni Amavasya celebrations, has prompted immediate action to prevent future tragedies.

The pre-dawn stampede on Wednesday unfolded as countless pilgrims rushed toward the holy waters for their ritual bath. Deputy Inspector General Vaibhav Krishna reported that the tragedy was triggered when pilgrims surged against security barricades.

The administration has introduced five crucial measures to enhance safety. Most significantly, the entire Maha Kumbh fair area has been designated as a No-Vehicle Zone, with all vehicular entry strictly prohibited. This includes the cancellation of VVIP passes that previously granted special access. To manage foot traffic more effectively, authorities have implemented a one-way route system for devotees.

The reforms extend beyond the immediate fair area, with vehicles from neighboring districts being halted at Prayagraj's borders to reduce congestion. Additionally, a complete ban on four-wheelers entering the city will remain in effect until February 4.

To strengthen oversight, the government has deployed seasoned administrators IAS officers Ashish Goyal and Bhanu Goswami to Prayagraj. Both officials bring valuable experience from their successful management of the 2019 Ardh Kumbh. Supporting them are five special secretary-rank officers with expertise in managing large-scale events.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken a hands-on approach, conducting late-night video conferences with senior officials from multiple districts including Prayagraj, Kaushambi, and Varanasi. He has ordered a comprehensive review of Maha Kumbh arrangements by the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, while directing Prayagraj's ADG and District Magistrate to ensure pilgrims' safe departure from the city.
