<p data-start="120" data-end="278"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">A leopard suspected of killing a four-year-old girl near Valparai in Tamil Nadu&rsquo;s Coimbatore district has been successfully captured by the Forest Department.</span></p>
<p data-start="280" data-end="718"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">The animal was trapped in the early hours of Thursday inside a cage placed near Pachamalai, close to the tea estate where the child, Roshini Kumari, was attacked on June 20 around 6:30 p.m. The cage had been set up approximately 700 metres from the estate workers&rsquo; residential quarters, near the spot where the leopard had dragged the child into nearby tea bushes and into the forest. Her remains were found the next day around 11:30 a.m.</span></p>
<p data-start="720" data-end="884"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Roshini was the daughter of migrant labourers from Jharkhand. Her family had moved to Pachamalai just ten days earlier after leaving another tea estate in Valparai.</span></p>
<p data-start="886" data-end="1098"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Following the incident, the Forest Department deployed 20 camera traps to monitor leopard activity in the area. The operation was led by the Pollachi Range with coordination from the Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR).</span></p>
<p data-start="1100" data-end="1330"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">As part of the government's relief efforts, Pollachi MP K. Eswarasamy handed over ₹9.5 lakh in compensation to Roshini&rsquo;s parents on Sunday. An immediate relief amount of ₹50,000 had already been disbursed a day after the incident.</span></p>
<p data-start="1332" data-end="1532"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">This case once again brings attention to the ongoing human-wildlife conflict in the Valparai plateau, which is known for frequent leopard sightings, especially during early mornings and late evenings.</span></p>
<p data-start="1534" data-end="1760"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Officials have urged estate workers and residents to remain alert and avoid venturing out during high-risk hours. Additional safety measures, including enhanced lighting and community awareness programs, are being implemented.</span></p>
<p data-start="1762" data-end="2071"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">This marks the third major leopard incident in Valparai in recent months. In October 2024, another four-year-old girl, Apsara Khatun, also from Jharkhand, was killed by a leopard near Uzhemala estate. In November 2023, a seven-year-old boy named Pradeep sustained injuries in a leopard attack near Sirukundra.</span></p>
<p data-start="2073" data-end="2295"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Wildlife experts have recommended long-term strategies such as installing protective fencing, improving infrastructure in worker settlements, and considering the relocation of vulnerable communities away from forest edges.</span></p>
<p data-start="2297" data-end="2438" data-is-last-node="" data-is-only-node=""><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Forest authorities assured that comprehensive efforts will continue to prevent such tragedies and improve safety for residents in the region.</span></p>
