Kolkata Police have lodged seven FIRs against BJP MLAs for allegedly violating the Calcutta High Court&rsquo;s directive for a peaceful Nabanna Avijan on August 9 and assaulting on-duty police personnel.
Authorities reported that five constables were injured after the march to the state secretariat turned violent. The FIRs, filed at the New Market Police Station, name BJP MLAs Ashok Dinda, Agnimitra Paul, BJP leader Koustav Bagchi, and others. Charges include damaging public property, obstructing government officials, threatening and verbally abusing police officers, assault, and breaching the court&rsquo;s order.
Of the injured policemen, three were admitted to SSKM Hospital for treatment, while two were discharged. Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma visited the hospital on Monday, confirming that three officers suffered head injuries.
The High Court had allocated two locations for the August 9 protest Santragachi Bus Stand under Howrah Police Commissionerate and Rani Rashmoni Avenue in Kolkata but demonstrators marched toward Nabanna from Dorina Crossing in central Kolkata. Violence erupted at Park Street and Jawaharlal Nehru crossing after a clash between protesters and police.
A particularly disturbing incident involved a protester&rsquo;s mother, who was hospitalised after allegedly being assaulted by police. Commissioner Verma stated that all CCTV, video, and drone footage is being reviewed to verify the claim before any conclusions are drawn.
