Relentless rainfall continues to batter Uttarakhand, bringing life to a standstill across the state. Following twin cloudbursts in Uttarkashi, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in multiple districts, including Dehradun, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, and Nainital.
As a precaution, all schools and Anganwadi centres in affected districts have been shut for the day. Key roads, including stretches of the Badrinath National Highway, remain blocked due to landslides and accumulated debris, prompting round-the-clock clearing operations by local authorities. In a major development, the Kedarnath Yatra has been suspended indefinitely for the safety of pilgrims. SP Rudraprayag Akshay Prahlad Konde confirmed that all devotees along the Yatra route have been halted at safe locations as falling rocks and debris make the trek treacherous. The stretch between Sonprayag and Gaurikund is particularly hazardous, and the Mandakini River is swelling dangerously.
The administration has placed police forces on high alert along the Kedarnath trail and issued advisories urging residents and pilgrims to stay away from riverbanks. The situation remains tense, with weather conditions expected to remain severe over the coming days.
