Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Sunday claimed the state has funded 80% of Bengaluru&rsquo;s Namma Metro project, with the Centre contributing only 20%. Speaking from his Sadashivanagar residence, he urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allocate at least ₹1 lakh crore for Bengaluru&rsquo;s infrastructure.
Shivakumar accused the Union government of failing to cover 50% of the land acquisition costs as promised, forcing the state to complete the project in the city&rsquo;s interest. He noted that despite being India&rsquo;s second-highest tax contributor, Bengaluru receives minimal returns.
Comparing tax devolution rates, he said Ahmedabad gets 20% while Bengaluru gets only 10%, calling for parity with other metros like Delhi. He criticised BJP MPs for &ldquo;tweeting instead of working&rdquo; and alleged that no significant funds had been brought in for the city.
Shivakumar also highlighted the innovative double-decker project and the Metro Yellow Line&rsquo;s role in boosting the IT corridor, adding that 1 lakh new IT jobs are generated annually in Bengaluru. He thanked corporate contributors such as Infosys, Delta and Biocon for supporting Metro station construction.
On claims of central funding for Metro phases 2 and 3, Shivakumar insisted there was &ldquo;no contribution&rdquo; and challenged the Centre to publish figures.
