After 24 hours of record-breaking rainfall, floodwaters in Jammu division have begun to recede, though the Jhelum River in Kashmir has crossed the danger mark, raising fears of further damage.
At least 30 pilgrims were killed in a landslide near the Vaishno Devi shrine in Reasi, while more than 5,000 residents were evacuated from low-lying areas. Rescue operations by the Army, NDRF and SDRF are underway.
Jammu received 380 mm of rainfall in 24 hours &mdash; the highest since records began in 1910, surpassing the 270.4 mm recorded in 1988. Rivers including Chenab, Tawi, Ravi, and Ujh started receding gradually, but water from the Jhelum has inundated Anantnag town.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the situation, while Home Minister Amit Shah and Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha assured assistance. Authorities have prioritized restoring power, water and communication.
Schools and government offices remain closed across several districts, while major highways, including Srinagar-Jammu and Srinagar-Leh, are shut due to damage. A bridge on the Tawi collapsed, and two cloudbursts in Kishtwar destroyed homes, crops and livestock.
The Meteorological Department has forecast cloudy weather with light rain in the next 24 hours, urging people to stay away from rivers and streams as flash flood risks continue in hilly areas.
