IndiGo&rsquo;s large-scale flight disruptions entered their fifth consecutive day on Saturday, with cancellations continuing across major airports in India. The airline has been battling severe operational disorder for nearly a week, recording more than 1,000 cancellations on Friday and over 550 on Thursday.
Delhi Airport announced that services are gradually improving and advised passengers to check their flight status before travelling. The update came a day after IndiGo suspended all domestic departures from Delhi until midnight due to overwhelming scheduling and staffing challenges.
A petition has been moved before the Supreme Court seeking the Chief Justice&rsquo;s intervention, arguing that thousands of passengers have suffered financial losses due to flight suspensions. The plea requests a suo motu inquiry, status reports from the Civil Aviation Ministry and DGCA, and a special bench for urgent hearing.
The DGCA has attributed the ongoing chaos to planning gaps and errors in IndiGo&rsquo;s implementation of new pilot duty-hour regulations, which put additional strain on crew availability.
IndiGo CEO Peter Elbers acknowledged the crisis, noting that December 5 saw the highest level of disruption with over 1,000 cancellations in a single day. He stated that full normalcy is expected to return between December 10 and 15.
Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said that the chaos stemmed from IndiGo&rsquo;s inadequate crew management while adapting to the revised Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) norms. He confirmed that the government has set up a committee to examine the lapses and that strict action will be taken against those responsible. Temporary regulatory relief has also been extended to the airline to help stabilise operations.
Despite improvements in Delhi, disruptions persisted across airports on Saturday morning.
