IndiGo faced its most severe operational disruption on December 5, cancelling more than 1,000 flights, accounting for over half of its daily schedule. The airline said the unprecedented move was necessary to realign aircraft and crew positioning after several days of escalating disruptions.
The airline acknowledged that earlier corrective steps had fallen short, prompting a broader operational reset. A large number of cancellations were deliberately planned to stabilise schedules and allow services to resume in a more orderly manner from the following day.
IndiGo said passengers were informed in advance through digital channels and advised not to travel to airports if their flights were cancelled. Additional customer support measures were activated, including expanded call-centre capacity and detailed guidance on refunds, rebookings and assistance.
A key priority was addressing the situation of passengers who had been stranded at major airports across the country. The airline said efforts were made to ensure such travellers could be accommodated on alternative services as quickly as possible.
The disruptions were attributed to a combination of operational challenges, including staffing and scheduling issues. Aviation regulators provided temporary relief measures, which IndiGo said would help improve stability over the coming days.
While the airline expects daily cancellations to reduce steadily, a complete return to normal operations is likely to take time due to the scale and complexity of its network. IndiGo indicated that full stabilisation is expected between December 10 and December 15.
The airline also acknowledged the inconvenience caused to passengers and said restoring customer confidence remains a top priority as operations gradually improve.
