Indian nationals evacuated from Iran arrived safely in New Delhi on Friday evening after witnessing weeks of protests, internet shutdowns and a harsh crackdown by Iranian authorities. Many returnees described the situation in Iran as dangerous and expressed gratitude to the Indian government for ensuring their safe return.
The arrivals came days after India issued an advisory urging its citizens to leave Iran amid a volatile security environment. The government had assured that all necessary measures would be taken to protect Indian nationals, including students, pilgrims, businesspersons and tourists.
Several returnees recalled that widespread internet shutdowns imposed following protests severely disrupted communication with families in India. Many said they were unable to contact relatives or even the Indian embassy during the peak of unrest. Protesters frequently blocked roads and confronted vehicles, adding to concerns about personal safety.
A student from Jammu and Kashmir, who was studying in Iran, said the protests had created fear and uncertainty, and credited the Indian authorities for coordinating their return. Others noted that while parts of Iran now appear relatively calm, restrictions on internet access remain in place.
Protests against the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei-led regime began last month and have reportedly resulted in the deaths of over 3,000 people across the country. While a slight improvement in internet connectivity has been observed recently, a full restoration is yet to occur.
Family members waiting at Delhi airport also thanked the Indian government for its swift action. The Indian Embassy in Tehran had earlier issued a detailed advisory asking nationals to leave Iran at the earliest due to the deteriorating security situation.
