In a daring rescue operation, the Indian Navy saved 14 Indian crew members from a Palau-flagged tanker, MT Yi Cheng 6, which caught fire in the North Arabian Sea, around 80 nautical miles east of Fujairah, UAE.
The incident occurred on Sunday when the Navy&rsquo;s INS Tabar, on a mission-based deployment, responded to a distress &lsquo;Mayday&rsquo; call. The vessel had reported a severe fire in its engine room. Demonstrating rapid readiness and bravery, INS Tabar immediately reached the scene and coordinated with the vessel's Master to commence rescue and firefighting operations.
Seven crew members were swiftly evacuated using INS Tabar&rsquo;s boats and provided medical aid. A specialised six-member naval team was deployed onboard the tanker with firefighting and damage-control equipment. They were later reinforced with 13 more Navy personnel, including officers and sailors.
Joint efforts between the Navy&rsquo;s team and the tanker crew managed to contain the fire, restricting it to the engine room. Continuous temperature monitoring and safety checks were carried out to stabilise the situation.
Thanks to their bravery and expertise, all 14 Indian crew members were saved without injuries, and the vessel was secured. The Navy&rsquo;s action underlines India&rsquo;s reputation as the first responder in the Indian Ocean Region, with a strong commitment to maritime safety and humanitarian missions.
