India has achieved a major milestone in its semiconductor journey with the launch of its first fully indigenous 32-bit microprocessor, named &lsquo;Vikram&rsquo;. The processor, developed by ISRO&rsquo;s Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL), was presented to Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Semicon India 2025 event in New Delhi.
&lsquo;Vikram&rsquo; is engineered to withstand the extreme conditions of space launch vehicles, reducing India&rsquo;s dependence on imported chips and strengthening its technological self-reliance.
Under the Semicon India Programme, the country&rsquo;s semiconductor ecosystem has been rapidly expanding. Currently, five fabrication units are under construction, while 10 projects in critical domains such as high-volume fabs, 3D heterogeneous packaging, compound semiconductors, and OSATs have been approved.
India has also supported design innovation through initiatives benefiting more than 280 academic institutions and 72 start-ups. Of these, 23 start-ups have received approval under the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme.
The Semicon India 2025 event features global industry leaders, including Applied Materials, ASML, IBM, Infineon, Lam Research, Micron, Tata Electronics, SK Hynix, and Tokyo Electron. Highlights include keynote sessions, panel discussions, paper presentations, and a dedicated Workforce Development Pavilion to promote career opportunities in microelectronics.
This achievement places India firmly on the path to becoming a global semiconductor hub and a key player in the global value chain.
